Generic Name: Enrofloxacin (Common Drug Name) Common Brand Name: Baytril Dose and Administration: Always follow your veterinarian's exact instructions. Always have water available for your pet. Do not crush tablets because they are bitter and can cause drooling. Baytril should not be given within 2 hours of dairy products. All medication should be completed even if your pet feels better. If you forget a dose, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication. Uses: Baytril is an antibiotic. It kills susceptible bacteria and infections in multiple body systems including the skin and urinary tract. Possible Side Effects: Stop giving the medication and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; or hives). Other less serious side effects may also occur. Continue to give the medication and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or drowsiness. Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet. Drug and Food Interactions: Discuss all other medications and supplements your pet is taking with your veterinarian as drug interactions can occur. Baytril should be separated from antacids, sucralfate, iron, aluminum, calcium, or dairy products by at least 2 hours or absorption may be decreased. Before giving Baytril, tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given warfarin, theophylline, probenecid, or phenytoin. When given with cyclosporine, Baytril can increase the risk of kidney damage from the cyclosporine. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Baytril. Precautions: Animals who are allergic to Baytril or similar medications should not take it. Animals who have been diagnosed with epilepsy, liver disease, kidney disease, or other neurologic disorders should take Baytril extremely cautiously only when the benefits outweigh the risks. Pets under 18 months of age or animals who are still growing should not take Baytril unless otherwise directed. Avoid use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals.
