Piroxicam is used to treat some cancers in dogs and cats and also for inflammation and pain due to osteoarthritis. What is Piroxicam? is an NSAID that is used to treat some cancers in dogs and cats and, to a lesser degree, for pain and inflammation due to osteoarthritis. What are the benefits of Piroxicam? can be used as an anti-inflammatory and pain medication in cats. Combined with other drugs to treat transitional cell carcinoma, a bladder cancer, in dogs. Helps treat chronic rhinitis in dogs and cats. Demonstrates effectiveness against fevers Formulated for: Dogs and cats How does this medication work? Piroxicam belongs to the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Piroxicam is a nonselective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor with inhibitory effects on both COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 produces prostaglandins that regulate homeostasis, allowing the kidney to respond to hypotension and protect the GI tract. COX-2 produces the prostaglandins that are increased in the presence of inflammation. COX-2 is upregulated in many types of tumors, including nasal epithelial tumors, mammary tumors, colorectal tumorsoral squamous cell carcinomaoral melanoma, prostatic carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder and osteosarcoma. How is this medication given? Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. What form(s) does Piroxicam come in? Capsule Common Brand Name: Piroxicam Dose and Administration: Use according to your veterinarian's instructions. Possible Side Effects: Includes stomach and intestinal ulcers and bleeding, dark or tarry stools (from bleeding into the intestines), vomiting, loss of appetite and peritonitis (from intestinal perforation). Some of these are life-threatening problems and they can occur relatively suddenly. The potential for ulcers increases when piroxicam is used in combination with corticosteroids (such as cortisone or prednisone), aspirin or phenylbutazone. Piroxicam can decrease kidney function and cause a sudden severe injury to the kidneys (papillary necrosis). Blood clotting may be impaired due to the effects of piroxicam on the blood platelets. As with other NSAIDs, this drug can cause liver injury with elevation of liver enzymes in blood tests. Precautions: Keep away from children and animals. Piroxicam should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Piroxicam should be avoided in animals with a history of bleeding, inflammation or perforation of the stomach or intestinal mucosa (lining). It should also be avoided in animals with high blood pressure. This drug must be used with caution in patients with heart failure. Piroxicam may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine ifother drugs your pet is receiving could interact with Piroxicam. Such drugs include diuretics or ACE-inhibitors (enalapril, benazepril, quinapril).
